LESSONS THAT KENYAN COUPLES CAN LEARN FROM THE PARENTS OF SINCERELY DAISY.

        “Spoiler alert”

“Sincerely Daisy,” is the third movie to make a premier on Netflix.  This show is a coming of age story about a girl who is transitioning from high school to university and how her journey for self-discovery unfolds.  This interesting tale was one I enjoyed but the two who in my case stole the show were Daisy’s parents. The duo baba Daisy (Sam Psenjen) and mama Daisy (Mbeki Mwalimu) onscreen chemistry was off the roof.

What fascinated me about the two characters was how the writer creatively crafted the two characters who are dynamic and different but were perfect for each other. They are unlike most conventional couples/parents in Kenya.

Firstly, their open display of affection was something unique I don’t mean nonexistence in Kenya I just mean not common. The opening and the ending of the movie shows the couple lovingly wrapped in an embrace. Before you jump into a conclusion that this is a fairy tale this is no fairy tale, they have issues that are relatable to many couples in the world.

They tackle issues like financial issues which is one of the main causes of divorce according to a survey by Ramsey Solutions. They want to send their daughter for further studies but they don’t have enough money, just normal stuff and this does pause as a big issue, but how they solved it was quite interesting both parties showed willingness and understanding.

The couple also dealt with issues that are prompted by how different they are, however there differences do bring them together rather than tearing them apart. When they disagree, they try to find middle ground even when it comes to parenting. Differences don’t have to tear people apart.

They challenged the “defined gender roles” although Mama Daisy in the movie does most of the cooking the husband also steps up to do some of the house chores.

The couple emphasized on the importance of communication in a partnership. They had a great rapport and could share things easily therefore making it easy, for they to handle all the issues and problems that occurred.

In my opinion I feel a work of art should mirror the society or strive to make the society a better place. Natasha Likimani the writer and the director Nick Mutuma did a commendable Job in developing the characters more so the couple. The actors Sam Psenjen and Mbeki Mwalimu did an amazing job bringing the characters to life.

If you are yet to watch the movie please do. Sincerely Daisy is a must watch!
