CORRUPTION THE NEW NORM
Who is to blame anyway?
Recently I was reading on the newspaper how the covid 19 funds provided by the government
to the counties were spent buying lavish tv sets that costs million of shillings. What's suprising
the most is anybody I showed the article to was not shocked or surprised most people just
mumbled how "they pocketed the money" and just continued doing whatever they are doing.
This I found infuriating the most maybe because I wanted people to react to the way I reacted
or even more annoyed! But truth be told this is not the first time they have heard the story
before, the stories of embezzlement and mismanagement of funds in Kenya is not news that is
really disheartening. Our education system is so poor that a crisis as big as the pandemic has
forced schools to close indefinitely and students are forced to repeat.
Our health system is so poor and exaguratingly expensive that a common mwananchi will not
be able to afford. Not to mention the joke in the name of insurance NHIF that everyone pays
for but barely helps anyone! Who is to blame anyway? Should we blame the so called leaders?
Should we blame the voters? Or rather the ones who don't vote? Who is to blame when you visit a
hospital and every medicine listed by the doctor is not found in the hospital? Who is to blame
when a child who is in class six and can barely make a complete sentence? Who is to blame when
people are dying of starvation? In a county where funds go to buy television and black out is
four times a week. Who is to blame when young girls can barely afford sanitary towels while the
women rep are screaming for the 2/3rd rule. Who is to blame when most kenyans can barely
make a living forget worrying about the pandemic.
When we look at all the issues that are affecting us it's easy to point fingers than to take
accountability. All of us are part of the problem yes! silence is a problem and unless we are all
ready to play the role the game will not change! Lest we all feign ignorance then let's not cry
when the wolves come for us.
We need to speak even when we are tired we need to fight even when we are hungry to never
give up even when we are hopeless.
